Aether lightvessels and lighthouses, like their terrestrial nautical cousins, are situated near dangerous areas. This may be an area where wayward asteroids hurl through space in random courses or are concealed from the sun, areas of cloud that fill the darkness and prevent hazards inside from being seen, space icebergs (more commonly known as comets), and such like.
